Some government members of the Public Accounts Committee in Parliament have voiced opposition to the proposed salary cuts for senior officials as part of the government's economic reform agenda.

Under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s plan, a 10 percent salary reduction was proposed for political appointees, parliament members, judges, and heads of independent institutions for two years.

However, Committee Chairperson and Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim said that reducing salaries amid rising living costs would damage the government's reputation and have negative consequences. He suggested that instead of salary reductions, other cost-cutting measures should be explored.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Dhigurah MP Ahmed Nazim also opposed the salary cuts, stating that due to legal constraints, only four institutions could have their salaries adjusted, saving just MVR 14 million annually. He suggested merging certain state institutions, such as the Maldives Media Council and the Maldives Broadcasting Commission, which collectively spend MVR 18 million annually.

He also proposed combining the National Integrity Commission and the Human Rights Commission to increase state saving.

Qasim additionally recommended dissolving the Road Corporation, estimating that doing so could save MVR 40 million. PNC MP Ahmed Saleem (Red Wave Saleem) supported reviewing state expenditure more comprehensively and proposed summoning Finance Ministry officials for further discussions.

A decision on the matter is expected on February 20. Parliament holds the authority to amend the salaries of ministers, judges, independent institution heads, and parliament members.
