The investigation into the death of Zakiyya Moosa, who was found dead with injuries in Noonu atoll Holhudhoo, is taking time as authorities do not consider it an ordinary death, Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau said last night.

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan, along with Shujau and other police officials, visited Holhudhoo to meet with residents, who voiced their concerns over possible police negligence in the case.

Shujau assured that the National Integrity Commission and the Human Rights Commission are also investigating the matter. He stated that if any officers are found to have mishandled the case, appropriate action will be taken.

Residents have raised concerns that the police tampered with the scene before forensic teams arrived and that photographs were not taken properly.

Shujau emphasized that the complexity of the case requires extensive forensic analysis and consultations with psychologists, pathologists, and experts from outside the country. He said the investigation, which has been ongoing for six months, is still working to establish the truth.

"We don’t believe this is a normal death. Finding the truth takes time. Once the investigation is complete, we will share the findings," he said.

Shujau also said that a trusted police team will be deployed to Holhudhoo to investigate the case.

Zakiyya's family and island council are scheduled to meet today, and further details will be shared with the public with the family's consent.

Her death, which occurred on September 10 last year, has sparked protests in Holhudhoo. Residents insist she was not mentally ill and could not have inflicted the injuries on herself.
