The government of Pakistan has ordered the closure of the factory of Pharmix Laboratories, a Pakistani pharmaceutical company, due to concerns regarding medicines containing hazardous chemicals.

Reports from the Maldives and other countries indicate that liquid drugs produced by Pharmix Laboratories contain substances like diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol.

The Maldives Health Ministry has taken a decisive step by prohibiting the import, sale, and use of 27 medicines manufactured by Pharmix Laboratories, all of which were previously approved in the country.

After receiving the report from the Maldives about the contamination in these medicines, Pakistan's drug regulatory authority has ordered the shutdown of Pharmix Laboratories' factory. The drugs are currently undergoing testing by the regulatory authority, and legal actions against the company will be determined based on the findings.

A company official, as reported by Pakistan's Dawn newspaper, said that the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) sealed the syrup section of the company. However, he denied company involvement in the action.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported the hazardous chemical presence in Pharmix Laboratories' medicines to the company after reports from the Maldives.

Various countries, including Fiji, Laos, and Belize, have also reported instances of Pharmix Laboratories medicines containing hazardous chemicals, according to local media reports.

Officials from multiple Maldivian authorities, including the Ministry of Health, Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA), Health Protection Agency (HPA), Aasandha, State Trading Organization (STO), and ADK, have been summoned to the Parliament's Human Rights and Gender Committee for questioning in connection with Pharmix Laboratories medicines.
