A 27 year old Chinese tourist has passed away while snorkeling near Alifu Alifu atoll Rasdhoo.

The tourist, who was staying at a guesthouse on the island, was snorkeling in the waters near Gangehi Island Resort when the incident occurred.

He was rushed to Rasdhoo Health Centre but was pronounced dead on arrival at 11:22 hrs yesterday. The police are currently investigating the matter further.

This incident follows a similar incident earlier this month, where a man on his honeymoon drowned during a snorkeling trip near Kaafu atoll Maafushi. The family of the victim in the earlier case has appealed for a thorough investigation and appropriate action.

Local reports say that the couple went snorkelling during bad weather with a private water sports service provider. The guesthouse where the couple were staying had cancelled its snorkelling excursions for the day due to the weather, according to the reports.

However, the couple, who visited the country for the first time, are said to have seen a group going snorkelling and went with them after that water sports service provider told them the weather was good.

The provider is said to have taken a large group of tourists on the excursion that day, while those who didn't know how to swim were made to wear life jackets. According to Mihaaru, the couple also got into the sea with their life jackets, but the man went missing and was later on found washed up on the shore.
