Currently, the only operational airport in Raa atoll is located in Ifuru.
Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has signed an agreement with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to develop an airport in Raa atoll Fainu in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's vision to boost transportation and stimulate economic growth in the region.
The agreement outlines the completion of essential work, including feasibility studies, an environmental impact assessment (EIA) report, and design work.
Currently, the only operational airport in Raa atoll is located in Ifuru.

However, many islands in the atoll have long been advocating for another airport to serve the region's growing needs. As part of addressing this demand, an airport is also being developed in Alifushi.
During his recent tour of the atoll, President Muizzu assured the community that construction of the Fainu airport would begin shortly. He emphasized that the new airport would stimulate economic growth by creating employment opportunities and fostering development in Fainu and surrounding islands.
Additionally, President Muizzu highlighted his commitment to increasing the number of resorts in the area, which he believes the new airport will help facilitate, further enhancing the tourism sector's growth and strengthening the economy of Raa atoll.
