Minister at the President’s Office Adam Rameez and his former wife State Minister at the Environment Ministry Fathimath Shamnaz Ali Saleem have both been suspended.
Minister at the President’s Office Adam Rameez and his former wife State Minister at Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Fathimath Shamnaz Ali Saleem have both been suspended from their positions.
Chief Spokesperson of the President’s Office Heena Waleed confirmed the suspensions and detailed that the Rameez and Shamnaz were suspended due to an ongoing investigation. However, Heena had not revealed the nature of the investigation.
However, the Maldives Police Service said on Wednesday that Shamnaz and two others, excluding Rameez have been placed under arrest on charges of sorcery.
It is yet unclear whether Rameez is suspected of being an accomplice.
Rameez, who is a close associate of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, previously worked at Malé City Council during the president’s term as the city’s mayor. He was among the first to be appointed to the President’s Office and was an active member of the current administration during its early days. However, he has not been involved in government affairs as of late.
Shamnaz, prior to her appointment, also worked at Malé City Council as an elected council member during President Muizzu’s mayoral term. However, she resigned from the council once President Muizzu assumed power. Before becoming a state minister, Shamnaz was first hired at Muliaage, the official residence of the President.
