President of Maldives Dr. Mohamed Muzzu has announced his decision to forego 50 percent of his salary, amidst the country's poor financial standing.

President Muizzu announced his plans via a post on X (formerly Twitter), in which he detailed that this decision was made in line with the government's efforts to rehabilitate the country's financial situation.

According to the country's laws, the salary of a sitting president should be MVR 100,000. However, President Muizzu will now receive MVR 50,000 each month.

This also follows his earlier decision to reduce the wages of all state leaders and political appointees by ten percent as well. Among these are also the leadership of state owned enterprises, Members of the Parliament and Judges.

However, this decision will exempt any employees receiving a salary below MVR 12,000 he also said.

The president said that these decisions reflect the cost reduction efforts of the government in time to submit next year's budget to the Parliament.

Maldives is currently almost crippled with debt which soars in the billions, and global financial and economic institutions strongly urging financial reform actions.

The government has been obliging, even going as far as removing 228 political appointees within the first year of its administration. The President said this would save the state MVR 5.7 million a month.
