Four Maldivian swimmers set an impressive 16 records at the Asian Open Schools Invitational Shortcourse Age Group Championships held in Thailand in August.

Four Maldivian swimmers set an impressive 16 records at the Asian Open Schools Invitational Short-course Age Group Championships held in Thailand in August.

The Swimming Association recently announced the official timings of the athletes, with Mohamed Rihan Shiham, Meral Ain Latheef, Amna Thazkiya Mirshad, and Izyan Nazim setting new benchmarks in various swimming categories.

Mohamed Rihan Shiham led the group by setting six records, excelling in multiple events including backstroke and butterfly across distances of 50m, 100m, and 200m. He also set a new freestyle 200m record. Notably, Rihan broke the 50m butterfly record set by Nishwan Ibrahim at the 2014 FINA World Swimming Championships, shaving the time down from 27.68 seconds to 27.06 seconds.

Meral Ain Latheef set four records, renewing the 100m, 200m, 50m, and 100m individual medley records in the butterfly category. She also broke the long-standing 100m individual medley record set by Hamna Ahmed at the 2021 FINA World Championships, improving the time from 1 minute 15.82 seconds to 1 minute 14.07 seconds.

Amna Thazkiya Mirshad set four records in freestyle and individual medley events, notably breaking two records that had stood for a decade. She bested Aminath Shajan’s 2014 records in the 100m freestyle, reducing the time from 1 minute 06.01 seconds to 1 minute 03.68 seconds, and in the 200m freestyle, from 2 minutes 28.41 seconds to 2 minutes 20.65 seconds.

Izyan Nazim set two new records in the breaststroke, breaking Hassan Ashraf's 2012 World Championships records. Izyan swam the 100m breaststroke in 1 minute 12.85 seconds, just edging out Ashraf’s 1 minute 12.91 seconds, and improved the 200m breaststroke record from 2 minutes 40.57 seconds to 2 minutes 37.35 seconds.
