Maldives on Tuesday established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Angola.

The Joint Communiqué was signed in a ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations (UN) in New York.

The two countries were represented by their respective Permanent Representatives to the UN, Thilmeeza Hussain from Maldives and Maria de Jesus dos Reis Ferreira from Angola.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives hailed the development as a "historic opening for cooperation connecting the peoples of the two countries in all areas of mutual interest".

Cultivating and furthering relations with other countries is a key priority of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's foreign policy.

The island nation currently maintains diplomatic relations with 173 countries.
