Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla emphasized the importance of global cooperation rooted in non-interference, peaceful dispute resolution, and mutual respect for sovereignty, during his address at the 4th Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Parliamentary Network in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Representing Maldives for the second time at the NAM parliamentary conference, Speaker Abdul Raheem highlighted the ongoing relevance of the Bandung Spirit which marks its 70th anniversary this year.

The Bandung Principles, formulated in 1955, laid the foundation for the Non-Aligned Movement by advocating respect for national sovereignty, non-intervention, peaceful coexistence, and cooperation in trade and culture.

“These principles, formulated 70 years ago respect for the independence of nations, non-interference in the affairs of other nations, peaceful settlement of disputes, and cooperation in trade and culture are still relevant today,” he said.

He said that the world today faces unprecedented challenges, from political unrest to global conflicts that threaten peace and development.

In this context, the Bandung Spirit serves as a timely reminder to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy over discord.

Addressing the climate vulnerabilities of small island states, Speaker Abdul Raheem urged fellow non-aligned nations to amplify efforts in climate advocacy. He stressed that environmentally fragile nations like the Maldives are bearing the brunt of climate change, and it is crucial that the global south works collectively to combat its effects.

“Maldives respects the Bandung principles. We, the legislators, must work together to make these principles a reality that benefits the people,” he said.

The Speaker also shared examples of how Maldives has advanced social justice and good governance through legislative action.

He noted that key laws such as the Social Security Act and the Decentralization Act have played a crucial role in strengthening society and laying the foundation for greater equality and justice. Speaker Abdul Raheem said that relevant parliamentary committees are responsible for reviewing the government's work and ensuring that these policies are properly implemented.

In closing, the Speaker called for NAM members to unite in defending peace, sovereignty, and justice.
