The Elections Commission (EC) has accepted the candidacy form of The Democrats’ presidential candidate Ilyas Labeeb after initial rejection.

His candidacy was initially rejected due to a lack of proof regarding whether his election agent, Fathimath Niuma, had settled an outstanding debt.

The Democrats' spokesperson and Malé City Council member, Mohamed Saif Fathih, informed that the relevant document, which was initially absent, had been submitted to the commission on Sunday evening, August 6.

Saif affirmed that the outstanding debt was a bank loan, and the document pertaining to it will be submitted to the commission on Monday, August 7.

Meanwhile, EC’s Deputy Chief Ismail Habeeb tweeted that the commission accepted Ilyas’ candidacy after he submitted all the necessary documents.

The deadline for submitting presidential candidacy forms for the September 9 presidential election will expire at 2:00 p.m. on Monday.

In addition to Ilyas Labeeb, other candidates who have submitted their presidential candidacy forms include Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) candidate and current president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Maldives National Party (MNP) leader Mohamed Nazim, and People’s National Congress (PNC) candidate and Malé City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim, Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) leader Faris Maumoon, will be contending independently, and former Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer are expected to submit their candidacy forms before 12:00 p.m. on Monday.

Despite opposition leader and former president Abdulla Yameen's plea to the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) to boycott the upcoming presidential election, PNC candidate Malé City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu submitted his candidacy form to the Elections Commission this morning.

However, Yameen has since changed his stance and decided to endorse Dr. Muizzu, according to senior officials within the coalition.
