Former STO Managing Director Hussain Amr has been appointed as the running mate of The Democrats' Presidential Candidate and Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb. The duo is scheduled to submit their candidacy form today.
Earlier, there were rumours circulating that Deputy Speaker of Parliament Eva Abdulla might become Ilyas Labeeb's running mate. Speculation suggested that The Democrats had offered to clear Eva's criminal record in order to secure her candidacy. However, the situation took a different direction when Hussain Amr joined The Democrats' recent campaign tour. Prior to embarking on the tour, Amr denied the rumors and affirmed his backing for Ilyas, dismissing any discontent with The Democrats as baseless.
The party confirmed that the nomination papers of Ilyas Labeeb and Hussain Amr will be officially submitted to the Election Commission at 1 pm on Tuesday. As The Democrats gear up to present their presidential candidate, they have been engaging in discussions with multiple political parties to challenge the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in the upcoming presidential election. Fielding a unified candidate has been under deliberation, and The Democrats have been actively pursuing this objective through talks with various parties, up until yesterday.
Senior members of The Democrats engaged in discussions with the Jumhooree Party (JP) on Saturday, August 5. However, details of the discussions have not been revealed.
Following the meeting, Acting Chairperson of The Democrats, Hassan Latheef, extended an invitation to the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to collaborate and work together.
