Deputy speaker of parliament and North Galolhu MP Eva Abdulla has said that The Democrats are participating in the upcoming elections with the goal of improving individual prosperity to ensure that Maldivians can lead dignified lives. She added that The Democrats intend to put an end to the current practice of seeking assistance.

Speaking at The Democrats' final rally held at Sultan Park, last night, Eva heavily criticized the government and said that it has been shaped in a way that forces individuals to beg from leaders.

Eva said that enslavement to leaders and robbery have become a commonplace during the last four years and The Democrats are determined to change this.

"God willing, we are out to achieve this. We will show that this is not how it should be. We will show Maldivians that having to beg leaders for income, employment, trade, or to live peaceful lives is not the only option," said Eva.

"We are here because our hopes to improve individual prosperity and establish dignified lives for Maldivians have not faded at all"

According to Eva, The Democrats are contesting in the elections with policies that have been formulated based on the priorities of the people. She said that their manifesto consisted of policies that will jointly "elevate" the current state of people while bringing about lasting benefits.

Eva said that former president and current speaker of aprliament, Mohamed Nasheed, had shown the people during his time as president that things can be accomplished for the people when a leader is determined to do so.

Speaking further about former President Nasheed's government, Eva said, "Aasandha [national health insurance scheme] was implemented within the first three years, putting an end to the need to beg for prescription medications. The Veshi Fahi Malé program [housing scheme] was established within three years. Single mothers started receiving allowances within one year, and the elderly were granted allowances within the same time frame. By the end of the first year, people no longer had to beg for school stationaries. Guesthouses were set up across the Maldives within eight months, and the value of Malé was elevated from the very first day in power," Eva said.

Taking this example, Eva said that the current presidential candidates have been influenced by the ideology of honesty, sincerity, speed, and quality.

Other speakers at the rally last night also emphasized that improving individual prosperity was the Democrats' primary goal and outlined their policies to achieve this aim.
