Two membership positions at the Broadcasting Commission are set to become vacant.

An announcement by the President's Office today states that two out of the seven members of the commission are nearing the end of their terms. As such, applications are now being accepted for the two positions.

Deadline for application has been set as Tuesday next week.

The announcement has come close to the end of the existing members' terms this time, although generally announcements are made weeks ahead if a member is to be sought for an independent institution.

This has come at the wake of a Media and Broadcasting Bill submitted to parliament by an independent MP which seeks to merge Maldives Media Council and the Broadcasting Commission.

Several media outlets and NGOs have expressed reservations about the bill, stating that it moves to inhibit press freedom.

Last night, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured that the parliament, in which the ruling People's National Congress holds super majority, will be rejecting the bill.

Several members of the Media Council will also see their term expire on December 14. Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts earlier commenced election of members to these posts, but efforts have since been halted.
