National Junior Surfing Championship 2022 begins

The Maldives Surfing Association (MSA) has launched the National Junior Surfing Championship 2022 to form the junior national surfing team for 2023.

The tournament, which began on October 26, Wednesday at theVarunula Raalhugandu area area in Male' city, is scheduled to continue till next Saturday. The events will be held in the Under 14, Under 16, and Under 18-year-old junior divisions.

Junior surfers for this year's national team were selected from Rannamaari Challenge 2021. Ahmed Ameer, Kayan Abdulla Areef, Yousuf Kayan Hamdhan Zaki, Mohamed Zayan, and Sayyid Salahuddheen are the young athletes selected. This is the first time a junior surfing athlete team is formed.

MSA has decided to give opportunities for the best athletes under the divisions to be selected for the national team. The national squad for the following year will include the chosen athletes. However, competitors in the Under 18 division who will turn 19 the following year are ineligible. Additionally, according to MSA, athletes' performance in this year's national leagues will not be taken into account when selecting them for the national squad for 2023.

Representing different parts of the Maldives, 41 young athletes have participated in the tournament. The competition will see 10 participants in the Under 14 category, 16 participants in the Under 16 category, and 16 participants in the Under 18 category.
