The Ministry of Education has paid MVR 250 million of the MVR 287 million owed to various companies and individuals for bills incurred between 2019 and 2023, Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu said.

During an interview with Mihaaru News on Tuesday, the minister said that while the biggest challenge was ensuring payments were made while continuing essential work, only MVR 37 million remains outstanding.

Minister Shafeeu said that the remaining MVR 37 million would be cleared once the ministry resolves certain issues related to the outstanding amounts.

His comments come amid concerns regarding a Male' area school project, which had been awarded to a contractor at a price of MVR 16 million during the tenure of former Education Minister Dr Aishath Ali, where the documents related to the project have been reported missing.

It has been reported that as per the agreement with the contractor, variation fees were also paid. However, the MVR 16 million owed now is for the cost of expediting the project.

Last July, the Education Ministry filed a police case against former Education Minister Dr Aishath Ali over the deleted official emails. On the day the police investigation was initiated, Aishath Ali posted on Facebook that someone had attempted to access the email address.

She said that her email address was deactivated on the last day of the previous administration.
