An incident involving a 16 year old girl at the Family and Children's Service Centre (FCSC) in Thaa atoll Veymandoo, has led to escalating tensions in the community.

The girl, who was relocated to the island nine months ago, has been involved in violent behavior, including fighting in school and attacking fellow students. The situation intensified when she attacked an employee of the FCSC, prompting protests from the island's residents demanding her removal from the island.

In response, the Ministry of Family and Social Development has initiated the process of relocating all five children staying at the centre.

Ministry staff visited the island on Thursday to address the issue, and the island council set a 24-hour deadline for the relocation, ending at 22:30 hrs tonight.

As the situation worsened, protests erupted, and police were forced to intervene, firing tear gas to control the crowd, some sustaining injuries.

The location to which the children are being transferred remains unclear.
