Following the powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Bangkok and Myanmar on Friday afternoon, the Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs is closely monitoring the situation and working through its embassy in Thailand to ensure the safety of Maldivians in the region.

The earthquake, which hit at 10:30 am Maldivian time, has not resulted in any Maldivian casualties, Maldives’ ambassador to Thailand, Fuad Thaufeeq, told Mihaaru News.

The Foreign Ministry also confirmed that Maldivians in Thailand are safe.

“We are working through diplomatic channels to ascertain whether any Maldivian citizens are currently in Myanmar,” the ministry said in a statement.

According to the ambassador, approximately 150 Maldivians are registered with the embassy. However, he estimates the actual number to be much higher, as Thailand remains a popular destination for Maldivians seeking medical treatment and shopping.

Embassy officials are currently reaching out to ensure the wellbeing of all Maldivians in the country.

In response to the disaster, Thailand and Myanmar have declared a state of emergency.

The Maldives foreign ministry has urged Maldivians in both countries to follow instructions from local authorities.

The government has also advised Maldivians in Thailand requiring assistance or further information to contact the Maldivian Embassy in Thailand at +66 611766502 or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at +960 7983400.

Additionally, anyone with information regarding Maldivians in Myanmar is encouraged to reach out through these channels.
