More than 35,000 sand bags have been strategically placed in various locations of Malé City to mitigate the forecasted rough weather that lies ahead for the city.
Malé City Council said that efforts have been underway in the most flood prone areas of the city since Monday night. As a result, over 35,000 bags were placed within two days, the council said.
Apart from the council, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has also been placing sandbags. The agency said that they have placed 533 bags across 63 households in Malé so far.
Maldives Police Service, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and MNDF have also launched a special joint operation to minimise damage in the forecasted flood. This is reportedly a directive of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
In a press conference yesterday, Police Commissioner Ali Shujau said that sand bags have already been placed in more than 56 houses which were the worst impacted by the floods earlier this month. The service will be available for other households upon request as well, he assured.
