All ice plants previously operated by Fenaka under the previous government will be transferred to Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) by February 15, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam said today.

In response to a question in Parliament, Minister Shiyam said that the decision to transfer ice plants to Fenaka was a poor decision.

He said that when the plants were handed over to Fenaka, the company lacked the necessary expertise and capacity to manage them. There were no engineers or refrigeration professionals involved, leading to numerous operational issues with many ice plants.

Some of these plants were not operational when the current government came to power.

However, Minister Shiyam said that efforts have been made to bring many of these plants back into operation.

Fenaka had halted operations of the ice plants last year due to financial losses.
