Shagur was fined, his dollars confiscated, and deported as part of the plea deal.
A Bangladeshi man identified as Shahmin Islam Shagur, 32, has been given a fine of MVR 12,000 after being cought attempting to smuggle USD 81,000 out of the country.
Shagur was discovered attempting to fly back home to Dhaka with USD 81,030 dollars concealed in cornflakes packets stored in his luggage. In the case, he was charged with attempting to smuggle goods out of the country, to which he pleaded guilty and entered into a plea agreement with the prosecution.
As part of the deal, Shagur agreed to be deported and return to his home country, with an expedited court verdict.
Based on his guilty plea, he was issued a guilty verdict, and fined by MVR 12,000. The US Dollars discovered in the case were also ordered to be taken by the state.
