The National Integrity Commission (NIC) has started a probe into police conduct during the investigation into the death of Zakiyya Moosa in Noonu atoll Holhudhoo.

Zakiyya was found dead in her residence in Holhudhoo with severe injuries to her throat, with a knife beside her.

Police have said that the 50 year old had three deep wounds on the left side of her throat and two on her right side.

However, five months since the death, Police have failed to make any arrests in the case, and Zakiyya's family have led a number of demonstrations calling for justice.

Residents of Holhudhoo staged a protest calling for justice for Zakiyya today as well.

The family of the deceased, as well as some other residents of the island, maintain that there has to be foul play involved in the death, claiming the severe wounds found on Zakiyya's throat cannot have been self inflicted.

NIC stated that as the public have made serious allegations of neglect and incompetence against the Police in relation to this case, the commission, of their own initiative, has decided to investigate police conduct in the investigation.

The commission said that in their probe, they will look into whether Police acted in accordance with laws and regulations.

Meanwhile, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) said last night that relatives of Zakiyya have lodged their concerns with them. With this, the HRCM, too, is looking into the conduct of institutions in this case.

Residents in the demonstrations are also raising accusations against Zakiyya's husband, calling for his arrest. However, no arrests have been made as of yet in relation to the case.

Although Zakiyya's body had been brought to capital Male' city by Police for further observation, no post mortem was conducted. A special team of investigators from the Police also visited the island.

Now, Police have also reached out for assistance from the USA's Federal Bureau of Investigation.

In an earlier press conference, Police have said that there are no indications of foul play, or involvement of another person, in Zakiyya's death.
