The labourers were brought to work on the Gan International Airport development project, which is being conducted through a USD 17 million (MVR 262 million) line of credit from India's EXIM Bank.
Development of the airport is contracted to Renaatus. Renaatus has also constructed apartment complexes in Hulhumale'.
As reported in The Indian Express today, the Indian High Commission in Maldives has commenced efforts to repatriate the labourers as per their request. The news also reports that the labourers are employed by Renaatus, an Indian company registered in the Maldives.
In relation to this case, the Indian High Commission has held a meeting with the Project Manager at Renaatus.
The Indian Express cites the Project Manager as revealing the repatriation request was made by 35 individuals from Odisha State and four from Tamil Nadu. It reports that the Manager said that all of these individuals have been dismissed from their jobs effective December 5.
He is further reported as having assured that unpaid salaries will be settled in the next couple of days, on request of the Indian High Commission.
Based on information received from the Indian High Commission, the report states that there are a total of 196 Indian labourers employed by Renaatus.
The High Commission of India has decided to facilitate the payment of due wages to them, and to arrange for their return.
