The bill, submitted by ruling party People's National Congress (PNC) Hulhumale' North MP Hussain Shareef on behalf of the government, was passed by 77 votes in favor from 77 members who took part.
Parliament has passed an amendment to the Legal Profession Act, removing the Attorney General from the Executive Committee of the Bar Council.
Bar Council's Executive Committee currently has nine members which include the Attorney General, the Council's President and Vice President elected from among lawyers, and six additional members.
The amendment, proposed by Hulhumale' North MP Hussain Shareef of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC), was approved unanimously with 77 votes in favor.

According to the bill, the council's executive committee will consist of the Council president, vice-president and seven other members.
The bill also includes the necessary amendment to the law to allow official agencies and registered educational institutions to affix their stamps of origin and conformity to documents issue.
The bill was passed without any changes as proposed by the government. The committee met with members of the Bar Council and sought their advice and the Attorney General's advice.
Bar Council will gain full autonomy once the Attorney General is removed from its Executive Committee, as proposed in the amendment to the Bar Council Act, the council said.
