The government has now reached the decision to verify the list of 4000 flat recipients under the Gedhoruveriyaa scheme announced by the previous government instead of re-evaluating all 20,000 application forms which were submitted.

In a press conference held today, Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib said that for the scheme announced on June 26, 2022, 6000 people had applied for two room apartments and 14,000 for three room apartments.

Muththalib said that while efforts had been made over the past 14 months to re-evaluate all these forms, many issues had come to light, causing delays in publishing the final list.

The minister said that with this in mind, the government has now decided to verify the list of 4000 recipients announced by the previous government in consideration of the requirements set then.

As per the previous government's requirements for the scheme, six different documents could be submitted as proof of residence in Male' for a minimum period of 15 years. These are:

1. A document confirmingd employment in Male'

2. A document confirming applicant's spouse was employed in Male' after marriage

3. A document confirming enrolment at a school/college/university in Male'

4. A document confirming that applicant's spouse is enrolled in a school/college/university in Male' after marriage

5. A document confirming that applicant's children are enrolled in a school/college/university in Male'

6. Documents relating to pension

Muththalib said that during verification, it would be checked if these documents were submitted. He said that the Anti Corruption Commission and the Auditor General's Office have also advised not to accept other documents, such as letters from councils.

He went on to say that the policies set then did not define 'uninterrupted residence in Male''. If this is interpreted strictly, then the requirements would not be met if the applicant went abroad for medical reasons or any other purpose during the fifteen year period, he said.

Due to this, the ministry will interpret it as applicants being eligible unless they have spent upwards of an year outside of Male'.

Echoing the President, the Minister also said that the final list after completing the verification process would be announced prior to Ramadan. He said that the verified list will be published, and a window will be provided within which any complaints or concerns can be submitted.
