Two generators have broken down in Haa Alifu Atoll Kelaa, causing power outages across a large part of the island.
Kelaa Council President Abdulla Infaz told Mihaaru News that the island experienced around 10 power outages in different areas yesterday.
Kelaa, home to approximately 1,700 residents, relies on two 450 kW generators and one 600 kW generator. Currently, only one 450 kW generator is operational.
Infaz said that the island requires more than 500 kW to maintain a stable electricity supply. Since the remaining generator cannot produce enough power, electricity is being distributed in shifts to different parts of the island.
"There is still no electricity in some parts of the island. We are providing electricity by switching supply between different areas," he said last night.
Fenaka Corporation is working to resolve the issue by bringing spare parts from the power plant in Haa Alifu Utheemu. However, it remains unclear when the problem will be fully fixed.
