Two MNDF officers amongst five arrested for abduction and torture

Police have said that two officers of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) are amongst five individuals arrested for involvement in the abduction and torture of a person.

Police have said that two officers of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) are amongst five individuals arrested for involvement in the abduction and torture of a person.

Police commenced investigations into this case when the victim was taken to Hulhumale' Hospital with serious injuries, prompting the Police officers on duty there to investigate. The victim was taken to hospital by his mother.

The 30 year old victim had sustained serious physical injuries, including bruising in his left eye. He had sustained burn injuries across his body, and severe bruising and other wounds appearing to have been inflicted through violence. One finger of his left hand had been cut off from the knuckle.

The five arrested in relation to the case are;

1. Ali Sami of Mehura, Raa atoll Kan'dholhudhoo

2. Ahmed Saaif Waheed of Hudhuveli, Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Gahdhoo

3. Mohamed Nahushan Hussain of Uthuruge-Aage, Thaa atoll Thimarafushi

4. Mohamed Nafaah of FullMoon, Kaafu atoll Maafushi

5. Ahmed Zayan of Link, Thun'di, Laamu atoll Gan

Of the five, Nafaah and Zayan are MNDF officers. The remaining three have prior records of drugs related offences.

Criminal Court has placed Nafaah in custody until the investigation is concluded, and the four others in remand in custody until the end of trial.

In a press conference held today, Chief Superintendent of Police Hassan Shifau said that MNDF has been notified that two of their officers have been arrested in the case. He said that the process in ongoing to take the required action against said officers.

In addition to these five, three minors were also involved in the abduction and torture, which the Police are looking into further, Shifau said.

He revealed that the victim had been held and tortured in an apartment leased under the names of two of the accused. He said that the investigation found that the accused have been conducting illegal drugs sales through the victim.

Search of the apartment uncovered a bottle of alcohol, packets used for sealing drugs, as well as a scale. A wallet in the premises also contained drugs, Shifau said.
