President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced immediate measures to resolve the issues faced by thalassemia patients, stating that the matter will now be handled under his direct supervision.

His remarks came after a visit to the Thalassemia Centre yesterday morning, following protests by patients and their families over inadequate services.

President Muizzu said that the centre has been operating without a Director General since 2017 and has been facing staff shortages, lack of medical equipment, and other operational difficulties.

He has issued directives to address these challenges, including hiring additional nurses, appointing a senior physician, acquiring essential medical equipment, and recruiting laboratory technicians.

Finance Minister Moosa Zameer also attended the meeting held to discuss financial constraints.

President Muizzu assured that funding will not be an obstacle in improving the centre.

“I will make sure that nothing is left unresolved due to financial difficulties,” he said.

The President said that he was unaware of these issues until the recent protest. However, he said that concerns had previously been raised with government agencies although n concrete action had been taken. He emphasized that he would personally oversee the centre’s operations to ensure a long-term solution.
