Educational programmes approved to be taught in the Maldives are being taught overseas, Maldives Qualification Authority (MQA) said, warning that certificates issued from such institutions would not be recognised by the authority.
The authority said in an announcement that they received information that some institutions have advertised and given out certificates for programmes taught abroad when they were only approved to be taught locally.
These MQA accredited programs were conducted at foreign centres that are not recognised by the authority, they said.
Because of this, certificates from courses run by such institutions would not be accepted, MQA also said.
"Local and international students have had to face many losses because certifications were issued otherwise [in not approved circumstances]. MQA cannot bear responsibility for such losses," the announcement said.
The authority has asked the country’s higher education institutions to comply with their program accreditation.
However, MQA said give that Maldivian higher education institutions believe that offering courses abroad is a boost to the country's higher education and relevant regulations are being formulated to facilitate that.
