Ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has said last night that work on the Israeli passport ban bill will proceed as scheduled.

This follows the rejection of a resolution submitted by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) during yesterday’s parliamentary sitting, which called on the government to expedite the bill. The resolution, which condemned violence against Palestinians, argued that no significant action had been taken in the past year to implement the government’s stand on the matter.

In a statement issued last night, PNC said that its parliamentary group voted against the resolution, as they believed it was introduced with bad intentions. The party said that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s stance on supporting Palestinians, highlighting his condemnation of Israeli actions and his advocacy in the international sphere for uninterrupted humanitarian aid to Gaza.

“Even experienced former presidents of Maldives are pointing out in the media that President Muizzu is doing for the Palestinian people what no other government in Maldives has done before,” PNC said.

PNC also noted that the current administration has provided the largest financial assistance to the Palestinian people within its first year in office, reaffirming its commitment to fighting for the rights of the Palestinian people.

During the vote on the resolution, 63 members opposed it, while 15 supported it. PNC Deputy President and Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thoriq voted in favor of the resolution, while one PNC member abstained, while five other PNC members did not take part in the vote.
