Maldives Sports Award, organised by the Ministry of Sports, has been postponed towards the end of the year, announced the ministry yesterday.

The award ceremony, which was originally scheduled to be held at the Hulhumalé's Synthetic Track Stadium on Thursday night, was postponed indefinitely by the Ministry on Friday.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Ministry said that the postponement is in line with the special cost cutting measures being implemented by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, and was decided upon after consultations with shareholders.

The decision comes after many preparations for the event were also done, including announcing the final nominations for each sport.

The Maldives Sports Awards became an annual event of the Ministry since it was first held during former Youth and Sport Minister Ahmed Mahloof's term in 2022, with the government spending heavily to hold the ceremony in the past two years.

MVR 6.1 million was spent on the ceremony the first year, which was during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration. About MVR 2.2 million spent on that ceremony went towards the travel and accommodation of the foreign sports personalities invited to the awards ceremony.

The second ceremony was held in March of last year, with local table tennis star Fathimath Dheema Ali and body builder Azneen Rashaad being crowned best athletes of the country.
