MP for Mahibadhoo constituency Ahmed Thoriq has called for the government to enter discussions with major businessmen and to reach a consensus on how to go forward with the tourism forex regulations instead of challenging industry leaders.

Leaders in the tourism industry have raised objections against the forex regulations set in place by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA). They have voiced reservations about how the regulations have been drafted, and informed the central bank that they cannot comply.

However, speaking at the ceremony held to mark one year in office, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu retorted that no changes would be brought to the regulations, and all resorts must comply with the regulations as they are.

Speaking in the budget debate held in parliament last night, Thoriq, who serves as PNC's Vice President, stated that the government must reconsider the measures that are being taken to resolve the dollar issues faced by the country.

Thoriq called on the government, PNC MPs, politicians and activists to refrain from targeting criticism at major businessmen.

He advised that the while the Maldives economy is in a dire situation as it is now, it is unwise to politically target and verbally attack leading businessmen of the country.

He highlighted the importance of holding discussions to resolve issues, and expressed hopes that a decision to implement moderate measures can be reached in this manner.
