The air quality monitoring system in Vilimale' has reported poor atmospheric conditions in the Male' City area today.

Readings from the monitoring system, located at Maldives National University's Center for Maritime Studies campus in Vilimale', show an air quality index of 107, which poses a health hazard. Earlier this morning, the air quality index was even higher, prompting authorities to urge high-risk individuals to take precautions. People in the area are advised to wear masks when going outdoors.

The air quality is expected to improve to moderate levels after 12:00 hrs today.

The atmosphere in Maldives has been increasingly polluted since yesterday, following heavy rains last week. Currently, the northern islands are experiencing the most severe haze.

During the Iruvai monsoon, or sunny season, the Maldives often experiences haze caused by polluted air from northern India.

However, this year's haze appeared early, even before the Iruvai monsoon began. Winds from Bay of Bengal typically bring haze to Maldives during this season, but this time, the pollution arrived in early December from the Arabian Sea. The unusual timing is likely to be caused due to Cyclone Fengal in northern India, which altered wind patterns.

This year's Iruvai monsoon began later than usual, officially starting last Thursday.
