Fathimath Nabaaha and Mohamed Ajfan Rasheed were crowned national champions in the 45th Milo Badminton National Championship 2018 on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old Men’s 1st division champion, Ajfan, has been awarded the title a grand total of eight times in his career, while this is the first victory for the 19-year-old Nabaaha, who won the first division championship.
Nabaaha won the championship without contesting in her final, due to her opponent Aminath Shahurunaz facing an injury during the competition. Shahurunaz also conceded to Nabaaha and her twin Aminath Nabeeha in the Doubles Final as a result of her injuries.
During the Men’s Final, Ajfan rallied himself to an easy victory by achieving 12-21, 4-21 against rising youth star Nibal Ahmed. This is the first time Nibal has contested in a Final.
“Since this is my first final, I was very anxious and couldn’t play well, but this is still an experience. The first two years, I contested in the Second Division. I won third last time. This time silver. By God's Will, I will get better,” said the young Nibal.
The pair consisting of Hassan Afsheen Shaheem and Ibrahim Shamiu proved victorious over Nashfan Mohamed and Nasheeu Sharafuddeen in the Men’s Doubles category.
Ahmed Thoif Mohamed and Nabeeha managed to take the title of Mix Doubles champions by beating Hussein Zayan Shaheed Zaki and Nabaaha.
C.S Sports took the title of the team event by beating United Victory.
