FIFA has begun research into holding a regional tournament for Himalayan nations titled the "FIFA Himalayan Cup".

The first stage of discussions for holding this tournament was done late last week and early this week during President of FIFA Gianni Infantino's visit to a few South Asian countries.

Infantino went to Bangladesh and Bhutan, a nation on the eastern edge of the Himalayas.

Nepalese sports news digital platform City Sports Network stated the purpose of the FIFA Himalayan Cup will be to present a systematic development opportunity for South Asian football resources.

No official decision regarding the cup has been made yet.

The Himalayan region has some of the highest peaks in the world. The five nations in the Himalayan region are Nepal, Bhutan, the China-Tibet region, India and Pakistan.

Some consider Bangladesh to be a part of the Greater Himalayan region.

According to City Sports Network, the decision has been made to include Maldives and Sri Lanka in the tournament even though they are not Himalayan nations.

FIFA has recognized regional competitions and continues to hold them, with the FIFA Asian Cup being held in Indonesia and Hong Kong for East Asian countries during the recent international break.

South Asian nations Pakistan and Bangladesh took part in the tournament as well.
