New Radiant Sports Club coach Francisco Manuel Caínzos has stated that it is a big opportunity for him to be appointed to the position and that his aim is to claim all of the titles that the previous coach and his friend Óscar Bruzón Barreras achieved for the club.
Spaniards Caínzos and Óscar are friends, with sources telling Mihaaru News that Caínzos was appointed as the club's coach upon Óscar's recommendation.
Caínzos said Óscar had a significant role in him getting the opportunity as New Radiant's coach.
He also said getting the opportunity from a historic club such as New Radiant served as valuable growth for his career.
"Óscar had a significant role in facilitating the opportunity for me to come to Maldives and New Radiant," said Caínzos during a Dhivehi Premier League match press conference on Monday.
"What is next is for me to show my skills and capabilities, and win achievements for this major club. My hope is, as Óscar's was, to win all of the titles. But it will be quite difficult," said the coach.
While speaking about his connection to Óscar, Caínzos said they text each other about two to three times each week.
"We speak to each other about two or three times per week. Óscar always asks about Maldives, the clubs and Maldivian supporters," said Caínzos.
In the year and a half Óscar spent at New Radiant, he has won all of the tournaments in Maldives for the club.
Óscar stepped down as New Radiant's coach after winning the Indian Super League in the previous season in East Bengal, India. He is currently working at Indonesia's Super League club, the Bhayangkara Presisi Lampung Football Club.
The club won the FA Cup last season under Caínzos, but the club lost to Maziya in the first tournament they played in the Cup Winners' Cup via penalty shootout. New Radiant also lost the Charity Shield to Maziya via penalty shootout.
Caínzos said there is a lot of competition this season. According to him, there are five strong teams. Losing a match will make it that much harder to win the league, said Caínzos.
"There are about three, four or five teams at the same level. As this is a short tournament with just 18 matches, losing or drawing a match will make everything tougher," said the coach.
New Radiant will be playing against Odi Sports tonight in the Dhivehi Premier League. Maziya will be playing against TC this evening.
