Victory not a big team anymore: Mohan

Victory coach Mohamed Shiyaz (Mohan) said that the team cannot be seen as a major club anymore.

While speaking about the point Victory gained against Maziya last week where Victory tied, Mohan said big teams have the advantage and that is because they play the Cup Winners' Cup before the league begins.

When a journalist asked Mohan whether he does not consider Victory a big team anymore, Mohan said Victory can only be a big team again once they win a title.

"We have been in a dire situation all this time. That is why I am talking about the work that needs to be done to get there. Unless we get to that point, we cannot be considered a big team," said Mohan.

"The first thing is to get into the big teams. Win a championship. Get a victory. Win a cup. Otherwise it is just a name. Victory is a major name. Even so, Victory needs to work hard to get to where the big teams are, specifically the teams that have gotten recent achievements."

Mohan said he considers a big team to be one that has played in finals and won a cup.

He went on to say that at the state the current players are, Victory has a team capable of competing with major teams.

"But no matter how many good players there are, I believe we can only be called a big team when we get there," Mohan said.

The last time Victory won a cup was in 2011. They have not won one since the 2011 President's Cup. 2025 was the first time Victory competed in the top division in Maldives after five years. Due to the players not being paid their salary in 2019, the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) suspended the club, which caused them to fall to the Second Division.

The club, which has been around for more than 50 years, was one of the most accomplished clubs in Maldivian sports at one point.

According to Mohan, Victory should sing its own praises once they return to being a superpower.

"We need to come back as a superpower. A team can only become that with achievements. It will always keep changing. Victory was among the teams that were always winning. That can only be done when we win cups," said Mohan.

Victory will be playing against Biss Buru Sports this evening in the Dhivehi Premier League. The match will start at 4:00 pm.
