Sport Minister Abdulla Rafiu pointed out that the Social Centre has been the only multi-purpose indoor sports complex in the country for over 30 years, and announced that the government has decided to implement 27 projects to bring an end to this struggle. 

Rafiu revealed these plans at the 'Ahaa Forum' held last night at State media PSM.

"For 33 years now, there has only been this one place for use as a multi-sports indoor complex in the entire country and in the Male' area," the minister said. 

The Social Centre's indoor hall is currently shared by various sports associations through a year-long schedule. The three sports which make permanent use of the premises are volleyball, basketball and netball. Besides these, table tennis, bodybuilding and carrom also use it for international tournaments.

Rafiu stated that to resolve the challenges faced by the lack of facilities, the government will build 27 indoor complexes across the country, including the Greater Male' Area. He added that work has already commenced in some islands. 

In the Male' area, indoor complexes are planned to be developed in Hulhumale' Phases 1 and 2, as well as Vilimale'.

"God willing, we will commence work on developing an indoor complex in Hulhumale' Phase 2 very soon. Complexes have also been planned for Hulhumale' Phase 1 and Vilimale'," he said. 

According to Rafiu, the sports complexes will also be equipped with gyms.
