Coach Istvan Urbanyi has asked the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) to establish a technical committee to help make decisions concerning the national football teams.

Urbanyi, who is also FAM’s technical director, said he had proposed forming a special committee for the national team.

The Maldives will play China in the first of three matches during the international break, with the game to be played in China.

Urbanyi said FAM president Ahmed Thoriq (Tom) had asked him about arranging a friendly against China. However, he said decisions should not be based solely on his views, stressing the importance of having a technical committee for the national team.

“I have sent a proposal to the management. They say it is important to have a technical committee. Then we can discuss [friendly matches as well]. We need to play at least two more matches before the SAFF Championship,” Urbanyi said.

FAM general secretary Ahmed Zareer said the association was discussing Urbanyi’s proposal.

He said the FAM constitution already provides for a Technical Development Committee, one of the association’s standing committees.

“The committee will also work on matters related to the national teams. So another technical committee for the national team is [being discussed],” Zareer said.

The Technical Development Committee is chaired by FAM executive committee member and senior national team manager Ahmed Abbas (Abbu), according to FAM.

FAM has previously established several committees, some of which have been criticised for being largely inactive.

The association has also established a National Team Committee. During the tenure of former FAM president Bassam Adeel Jaleel, the committee included two former government ministers. However, the committee later appeared to become inactive.
