Coach of the Maldives national football team István Urbányi has said that there will be an opportunity in the future to take on players for the national team from Dhidhdhoo Sports Club and Gadhdhoo Sports Club, two teams that are competing in the Dhivehi Premier League (DPL).

The national squad put together to play the friendly matches against China, Kyrgyzstan and Lebanon did not see players from either team, but Urbányi said if both teams bring about additional changes, players from both teams will be chosen for the national team.

He advised both teams and neighboring islands to recruit players and give more opportunities for Maldivian players.

Urbányi stated there is no question that the quality of the DPL is improving. Urbányi, who is also serving as the Technical Director of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM), said that island teams playing in the league are celebrated by everyone.

However, Urbányi highlighted the major roles played by foreign players within both teams. 

"There are no players from either team on the national squad currently. However, more players need to be found from those islands and neighboring islands and recruited, not just the current players on the squad. Then we will have a higher chance of seeing their style of play," said Urbányi.

Urbányi believes that both teams will experience difficulties as it is their first season playing in the DPL.

"Both teams are doing good work. Right now I feel that Dhidhdhoo is slightly stronger. They can compete against any team. And every team, players, everyone will experience major obstacles in their very first season," stated Urbányi.
