The Maldives secured a 4-0 victory against Sri Lanka in the AFC U-20 Asian Cup Qualifiers.
With this victory, the Maldivian team secured a spot in the top two of the group, guaranteeing a place in the next stage of the qualifiers. From Group K, which includes the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Brunei, the other team to advance to the next stage is Myanmar, the host nation for this group's qualifying matches. In the match played today at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar, the Maldivian team launched several dangerous attacks toward Sri Lanka's goal during the first half.
Attacks by the Maldives' Mohamed Shamhaan, Ahzam Rasheed, Captain Mohamed Ilan Imran, and Nassaah Ibrahim Nasir were saved by Sri Lankan goalkeeper Shathin Kathaafi Shaheed.
The Maldivian team took the lead in the third minute of first-half stoppage time. A shot from Nassaah was saved by goalkeeper Shaheed and rebounded. Captain Ilan scored the goal by sending that ball into the net with a volley.
The Maldivian team scored its second goal in the 60th minute through Mohamed Shamhaan. He scored the goal with a dangerous low shot from outside the penalty area. Further trouble arose for Sri Lanka in the 63rd minute when their player Mohamed Farik Faroon (Mohamed Fuad) was shown a second yellow card followed by a red card, sending him off the pitch.
The team was forced to play the remainder of the match with one less player. Nassaah took advantage of this for the Maldivian team. He scored two goals in quick succession. He scored his first goal in the 78th minute by heading in a ball generated from a corner taken by Ahzam.
He scored his second goal in the 80th minute from a chance set up by Ilan.
In today's other match in this group, Myanmar defeated Brunei 7-0. Myanmar currently sits at the top of the group on goal difference. The group winner will be decided in Sunday's match between Myanmar and the Maldives.
Under the new rules recently introduced by the AFC, participating teams in the qualifiers are divided into two phases. These are the "Qualification Phase" and the "Development Phase."
The Development Phase consists of lower-ranked Asian nations. By finishing among the top two teams in Group K of this phase, the Maldivian team has been promoted to the Qualification Phase.
The Qualification Phase matches in which the Maldives will next compete will be dedicated to the AFC U-20 Asian Cup Qualifiers to be held in 2029. Those matches are scheduled to be played during 2028.
In this year's main Qualification Phase currently underway, the top two teams from the groups will qualify for the U-20 Asian Cup to be held in China next year.
