President of the Maldives Surfing Association (MSA) Mohamed Sobah (Chey) has been elected as the Vice President of the Asian Surfing Federation (ASF).

Sobah, who is a founder of the MSA in 2001, was elected as the Vice President of the ASF as a representative of the South Asian region.

A new president was elected for the ASF after 15 years during the online congress held on Friday. The previous president was Japan's Atsushi Sakai, who held the position since 2011 until last Friday.

He did not run as a candidate for the election. India's Arun Vasu was elected as the ASF's President.

There are four Vice Presidents for the ASF, who will be representing the four regions in Asia.

ASF's General Secretary is Japan's Nobunori Saito. The Executive Committee (ExCo) consists of members representing Indonesia, Japan, Afghanistan and China.

The ExCo's term will come to an end in 2030.

The MSA said that Sobah being elected as the Vice President of the ASF is seen as growth for Maldives' surfing community and Maldives as a whole.

Maldivian surfers qualified for the Asian Games for the first time with Sobah as the President of the MSA.

The Asian Games, which will begin next month at Aichi, Japan and Nagoya, Japan, will see Maldivian surfers compete in the surfing event.

The opportunity for women surfers to compete in national competitions and the national women's surfing team, both for the first time, was brought about during Sobah's term as president.

Sobah is a very active individual in sports, social awareness and reforms in social religious awareness. Sobah has held the General Secretary position in the Jamiyyath Salaf, and also conducts social and societal reform efforts as the president of the non-government organization Peace Foundation.
