Following a total hiatus of 18 years, New Radiant defeated Buru Sports with a 5-0 scoreline in the opening match of the restarted Cup Winners' Cup.

The tournament was last held in 2008. On that occasion, the tournament was also won by New Radiant.

In the match played this afternoon at the National Football Stadium, New Radiant's Dorielton Gomes Nascimento (Dori) scored a hat-trick. Just 18 seconds into the match, he took the lead for New Radiant.

In a chance created right as the match began, Dori headed into the goal a cross delivered from the edge of the area by Moosa Yameen.

Although strong attacks were seen, the first half ended with only that goal. In that half, Buru was believed to have equalized. That occurred when Abdulla Yameen struck a free kick awarded to Buru outside New Radiant's area, with the ball penetrating through New Radiant's defensive wall. When Areen Abdulla Ibrahim sent that ball into the goal, the goal was disallowed as he was in an offside position.

In the second half, New Radiant took complete control of the match along with Dori's excellent performance. The Brazilian forward completed his hat-trick with two quick succession goals. In the 60th minute of the match, he scored the second goal with a header from a cross delivered by Guilherme Silva. And four minutes later, he scored to complete his hat-trick.

With these three goals, Dori has scored five goals in his first two matches playing for New Radiant.

New Radiant's fourth goal was scored by Ali Fasir (Sentey), who came on as a substitute. When his header in the 68th minute was saved by Buru's goalkeeper Shaihan Ali, the ball rebounded. Sentey quickly sent that ball into the goal.

The team's fifth goal was scored in the 73rd minute by Liberia's Abdulai Bility.
