Maziya has defended the Charity Shield by defeating New Radiant 5-3 in a penalty shootout.
This is the seventh time Maziya has accomplished this victory in the Charity Shield played to open the football season. The team also holds the record for winning this shield the most times.
Full-time of the match ended in a 3-3 draw.
Maziya equalized the score with two goals scored in the second half.
New Radiant finished the first half having scored three goals. They also held a two-goal lead when that half ended.
New Radiant took the lead in the fourth minute of the match. That goal was scored by Brazilian forward Dorielton Gomes Nascimento (Dori), who newly joined the team this season. The opportunity to score that goal was created for him by Brazilian winger Guilherme Silva, who played for New Radiant last season as well.
After New Radiant's defense stopped an attack mounted by Maziya's players, the quickly forwarded ball reached Silva. He advanced at high speed and crossed the ball toward the front of the goal from the side of the area. Dori headed that ball into the goal.
New Radiant's second goal was one that displayed a combination between one of the oldest players on the pitch, Ali Fasir (Sentey), and Ethan Ibrahim Zaki, one of the young players present on the pitch.
In the 36th minute of the match, on a counter-attack opportunity, Ethan advanced with the ball from within Maziya's half and passed the ball to Sentey. The experienced forward sent the ball into the goal, giving Maziya's goalkeeper Hussain Shareef no chance at all.
In the 43rd minute of the match, Maziya's goal was scored by Ilan Imran. Receiving a delightful pass given by Ibrahim Mahudhee Hussain (Feydhoo Ibbe), Ilan sent the ball into the bottom corner of the goal.
Maziya could not remain long with the margin narrowed to one goal. In the injury time of the first half, Dori scored an additional goal to expand New Radiant's lead once again. The opportunity to score that goal was also created for him by Silva.
However, this time Dori received the ball near the middle of Maziya's half. He advanced with that ball at rapid speed. Entering inside the area, he chipped that ball into the goal over goalkeeper Hussain Shareef. Hussain approached that ball by diving to get it from under Dori's feet, but the experienced Dori gave no such opportunity.
The second half showed Maziya's dominance. Maziya brought an end to the two-goal lead held by New Radiant by coming from behind.
Less than 10 minutes after the second half started, Feydhoo Ibbe scored a goal to narrow the margin.
At that moment, New Radiant's defense was scattered. Haisham Hassan (Bidi) was the first to approach the ball in that attack. Even though the ball was lost from him, New Radiant's defenders were not successful in clearing the ball away.
Then that ball was received by Ilan. New Radiant's goalkeeper Ahmed Sameer also came forward to get the ball from him, but he could not get the ball. And even though New Radiant's players tried to clear the ball out, control of the ball was lost. At that moment, Feydhoo Ibbe sent that ball into the goal.
Maziya's equalizer was provided by Ilan. Ahmed Aiham (Fatho) advanced from the side of the area, and standing near the goal line, Ilan headed the ball crossed into the area into the goal.
In the build-up to that goal, a delightful combination play between Maziya's Abdulla Looth Ibrahim and Aiham was seen.
From inside the center circle, Aiham gave that ball to Looth who was ahead. He advanced with that ball and passed it back to Aiham. Aiham advanced from the side of the area and sent the ball after dribbling past New Radiant's defender as well.
As full-time of the match ended in a draw, instead of playing two halves of extra time, the decision was made to go to a penalty shootout.
Maziya converted all penalties they took in the penalty shootout. That team's penalties were taken by Ilan, Aiham, Nassah Ibrahim Nasir, Aidh Mohamed Javeez, and Haisham.
Unsuccessful for New Radiant was the penalty taken by their player Mohamed Naim. Goalkeeper Hussain saved that penalty. Other penalties for that team were taken by Dori (first penalty), Moosa Yameen, and Ahmed Abdulla (Lily).
Mohamed Naim's penalty for New was not successful. Goalkeeper Hussain saved the penalty he took.
The penalty that won the match for Maziya was converted by Haisham.
