Eight Maldivian athletes have completed their opening events at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
On the opening day of the athletics event, Hassan Saeed, Aishath Shaba Saleem, Ziva Moosa Shafiu and Ahna Nizar competed in the 100m, while Fasooha Ahmed took part in the women's 800m. The four female athletes recorded either season-best or personal-best performances.
Ziva and Ahna both set personal bests in the women's 100m.
Ziva finished fifth in the fourth heat with a time of 12.09 seconds, while Ahna placed fifth in the seventh heat in 12.19 seconds. Both times are the fastest of their careers.
Shaba finished fifth in the first heat of the women's 100m in 12.59 seconds, marking her fastest performance of the season.
The women's 100m national record of 11.87 seconds is held by Mariyam Rooya Ali, who set the mark at the All Comers Series 2 in Jamaica in 2024.
Saeed finished fifth in the ninth heat of the men's 100m in 10.77 seconds, just 0.03 seconds outside his season's best. He holds the Maldivian national record of 10.33 seconds, set at the MVP Track and Field Meet in Jamaica in 2016.

Fasooha, the national record holder in the women's 800m, completed the event in 2:19.86, her fastest time of the year. She set the national record of 2:13.81 at the 2024 Under-23 Championships in Sri Lanka.
The men's and women's 400m events were also held on the opening day.
In the women's race, Aminath Layana Mohamed finished seventh in her heat with a time of 1:01.05. Her personal best remains 1:00.04, set at a meet in Sri Lanka in 2023.
In the men's 400m, Hussain Zeek Suad finished seventh in the second heat in 49.96 seconds, 0.87 seconds slower than his personal best of 49.09 seconds, which he set at this year's Association Championships.
Adam Riffath placed seventh in the third heat in 50.94 seconds. His personal best is 49.07 seconds, also set at this year's Association Championships.
The national record in the women's 400m is held by Aishath Hassan, who clocked 57.56 seconds at the national time trials in 2022. The men's national record of 47.48 seconds is held by Hassan Saeed, set at the All Comers Meet 4 in Jamaica in 2013.
Maldivian athletes are scheduled to compete in the men's and women's 200m events at the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday. Saeed, Riffath and Zeek will represent the Maldives in the men's race, while Ziva, Ahna and Layana will compete in the women's event.
