The first strategic plan specifically for the enforcement of Maldivian women's football has been included in the Football Association of Maldives' (FAM) Extraordinary Congress's draft agenda, which is set to be passed tonight.
The "Women's Football Development Strategic Plan 2026-2030" includes a complete roadmap detailing football for interested women across Maldives, progress in the field, and finding equal opportunities in seeking achievements.
The plan is set to be enforced in two phases.
Main aims of the plan:
- Increasing participation of female players: To increase the number of registered female players to 1,500 by 2030.
- Framework for tournaments: Women's National League, FA Cup, President's Cup, U-16 and U-18 National Championships to be held regularly.
- Grassroots and schools: To hold yearly grassroots festivals in 15 atolls, and to include football in school PE programs.
- Resources: To establish four training hubs for women's football in Male'/Hulhumale', Addu, Kulhudhuffushi and Lhaviyani Atoll.
A copy of the strategic plan has been made available, with FAM President Ahmed Thoriq's statement reading that women's football is an important part of the future of Maldivian football. It also reads that the plan will result in being of great aid in empowering women within society and the sports environment.
"The FAM will stand tall by prioritizing in building an inclusive and encouraging environment where every girl and woman can participate in football, progress and be given the opportunity to score achievements," as was written by Thoriq.
"We need to come together to bring new opportunities for girls and women across Maldives, in order to make Maldivian football stronger and build an inclusive future."
