Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC) has today issued a statement calling on broadcasters to uphold disciplinary standards when airing matches of the ongoing FIFA World Cup. 

The MMBC statement reads that as World Cup fever grows, broadcasters must ensure they abide by Islamic disciplinary boundaries in broadcasting matches and related news. 

"When airing matches, broadcasters and rebroadcasters must remain vigilant of images and audio which contravene disciplinary standards. All broadcasters and news outlets must also abide by Islamic principles and disciplinary standards when presenting news and information," MMBC said. 

The statement does not specify whether it was issued in relation to a specific incident. 

In this World Cup, only State media PSM and MediaNet hold the rights to broadcast matches. 

FIFA World Cup 2026 commenced on June 11 and is set to conclude on July 19. The matches are played in host countries USA, Canada and Mexico. Currently, the tournament is at Round of 32 stage.
