Most promising badminton players in the country, Aminath Nabeeha (Nabi), Fathmath Nabaha (Naba), Hussain Zayan Shaheed and Nibal have made it to the five finals in the open category of the Badminton Association Championship.
The Badminton Association Championship is being held this year after a seven year hiatus.
All four of them won three events in the semi-finals and secured spots in the finals.
These names feature in each of the five finals of the open category being played today.
Matches in which these four stars face off against each other are expected to be most competitive. In the Women's Singles final, Nabi will be playing against Naba, while the Men's Singles final will have Zayan face Nibal.
In the Mixed Doubles final, these four will be playing in two pairs.
In the Women's Singles semi-final, Nabi won against Shuba Mohamed Shareef with 5-15, 2-15. Naba made it to the finals through beating Yalvy Hussain Zuhury with 10-15, 8-15.
In the Men's Singles semi-final, Zayan defeated Haisham Ibrahim Ali with 6-15, 12-15. Nibal, meanwhile, secured his finals spot through winning the match against Hassan Zayan with 9-15, 10-15.
Nibal and Nabi's pair made it to the Mixed Doubles finals through winning against Mohamed Ajufan and Aishath Yooha Ahmed with 9-15, 10-15. Zayan and Naba meanwhile beat Mohamed Hisham Latheef and Nafha Nasrullah with 4-15, 1-15.
In Women's Doubles semi-finals, Nabi and Naba's pair won against Fathimath Imthisaal Saudhulla and Mariyam Shafahath with 2-15, 4-15. Men's Doubles semi-finals saw Zayan and Nibal emerge victorious against Sharaf and Hassan Zayan with 7-15, 11-15.
The Badminton Association Championship was last held in 2019. That year's champions were Zayan Zaki and Nabaha.
After 2019, the championships were interrupted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as internal rifts within the association.
Last year, the association held its elections anew, with former General Secretary Ishfan Mohamed being elected President. The association's events have since resumed.
