Former athlete and experienced sports administrator Mohamed Hanim has been appointed Deputy Commissioner of Sports. 

Commissioner of Sports is a post established under the Sports Act. However, the Act makes no mention of a Deputy Commissioner of Sports. This is the first time that an appointment has been made to this position. 

The current Commissioner of Sports is Mohamed Tholal. 

Hanim has previously worked at various capacities at the Sports Ministry. At present, he is the President of the Skating Association. 

During his youth, he was a leading sprinter. He also played football at the national level. 

Hanim also took part in the 1998 Seoul Olympics as part of the Maldives team. This was the first Olympics Maldives had participated in. 

He later served as Coach for the National Athletics Team and has been an active advocate for raising awareness on exercise and wellbeing. 

Hanim also served as Manager for the National Football Team that won the 2008 SAFF Championship, and the New Radiant team that won third place in the 2005 AFC Cup.
