Maldives' youth national team has beat Singapore U-19 team in a friendly match in preparation for the SAFF U-20 Championship.

The game took place at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium yesterday evening, with Maldives winning 4-3 against Singapore.

This is the first match that was played under the senior national team’s head coach, István Urbányi, who is acting as Maldives' coach for the third time. Last night's match was his first time coming out with a Maldivian team in 12 years. Urbányi took over as the Maldives' Technical Director and senior national team coach in January 2026.

He will also be instructing the Maldivian team for the SAFF U-20 Championship being held in Maldives.

Yesterday's goals were scored by Mohamed Ilan Imran, Ethan Ibrahim Zaki, Ahuzam Rasheed and Alhan Faisal Ameen on the side of Maldives.

The Maldives team left for a week-long training camp in Singapore last Friday. The second friendly match against Singapore will be on Wednesday, with the Maldives team returning on Thursday.

Singapore's U-19 team is preparing for the ASEAN U-19 Boys' Championship, which is to be held in Indonesia from 1st June to 14th June.

The SAFF U-20 Championship will take place at the Galolhu Stadium from 23rd March to 4th April. The Maldivian team began their preparations with a trial that was conducted for the players in January. More than 150 players attended the trial.

In the tournament where all seven member nations of SAFF will compete, the Maldives was placed in Group A along with Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and Nepal. Group B consists of the defending champions India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
